Life between moves

Leave room in the homecoming plan

A few practical ways to keep expectations and everyday arrangements flexible.

Talk about the ordinary details

Meals, visitors, errands and sleep can all become decisions in the first days together. Discuss preferences where possible instead of assuming a surprise-packed schedule will suit everyone. Keep room to adjust plans as circumstances change.

Let a new routine take shape

People may have developed different ways of managing everyday tasks during time apart. Describe what has been working and ask what the other person needs. The first attempt at a shared routine does not need to be the final version.

Use support when it would help

Official deployment resources include information on returning home and reintegration. Check Military OneSource or a local Military and Family Support Center for current options. A journal can offer practical prompts, while personal concerns may need a qualified professional.
