If I Am Truly Crazy

(Not sure how I feel about using a dependent clause as a title, but lets just go with it.)

So yesterday I saw this on my iPhone:


and it made my gag reflex immediately activate. Yeah, that’s right, I’m going to run the Big D Half Marathon (with Mary Beth!), and no, I have not trained for this race, and yes, I am frightened. (Perhaps, as Aragorn says, not nearly frightened enough.)

Let’s review:

  • I haven’t been specifically training for this race.
  • My last long run was in January.
  • I’ve spent the last two weeks in the throws of moving, and despite a serious effort to stay active, I haven’t logged the kind of miles that prepare your for a half.

So why do I feel compelled to run this race?

  • It’s Mary Beth’s first half marathon!
  • Julie and Bianca will be there, too!
  • I’ve been race deprived! (My last race was in August aka too long ago.)
  • Big D holds a special place in my heart! (It was my first solo half marathon and my first solo full marathon.)
  • It’s an excuse to go home and see all the people I love.

I guess I could have achieved that last one with just a visit and skipped the 13.1, but we’ve already established that I’m crazy. The plane ticket has been purchased, lodging has been arranged, and although I’m nervous about the race itself, I’m uber excited to go home. It’ll be a quick trip, but I have no doubt it’ll be totally worth it. (Hopefully I’ll still feel it was worth it after the race!)

More Marathon Musings

Because one marathon post just isn’t enough.

Number Crunching:

  • My bib number was 497. If you add up the digits (4+9+7) you get 20. If you add those digits (2+0) you get 2. This was my 2nd marathon. Freak! Or am I a freak for figuring that out?

Insider tip: Wear your SPIbelt on the outside of your poncho. It's dorky but smart; the poncho won't fly up, and you'll have easy access to the goodies.

  • I crossed the halfway point at 2:11:55. The second half of the race took me 2:12:58. That’s one minute (almost exactly) between halves. Pretty even! (When I think about how crappy I felt during the later miles, I’m even more impressed that I maintained my pace for the second half. I chalk it up to the strength of my desire to finish
  • Way back on New Year’s Eve & New Year’s Day, I ran back to back half marathons. My finish times were 2:08:13 and 2:13:58. If you add those up, you get 4:22:11 , which is not that far from Sunday’s finish time. I didn’t think the NYD would be a good predictor of my possible full marathon capabilities, but I guess it was.

Physically Fit:

  • I’m sore, but I am still able to walk. It kind of feels like when you have a hard workout after not working out in forever. Muscles that I didn’t know I had are popping up. It hurts in a good way.
  • My right foot is a different story. It hurts in a bad way. It’s strange because I never felt any pain in this part (the bottom) of my foot before. I always figured my knee or maybe the top of my foot (which gave me some trouble previously) would be what ails me. Why you turning on me now, foot?!
  • One of the toes on my other foot, has turned to the dark side. That’s right: black toenail. I’ve had one before. (My second toes on both feet are long, gross- I know, so I think it’s inevitable when I do really long runs.) I’ll spare you the picture.

Moving Forward:

  • My next race is a 10 miler next month. Assuming my foot is cool, I’ll run it. I have not signed up for any other races beyond that. Strange. I have been racing full tilt since the start of deployment. I’m not sure yet if I’ll sign up for more races. (I had originally intended to, and I already have some in mind. It just depend on what happens with my foot.)
  • Immediately after the race, I thought, “I can do anything!” Climbing Everest immediately came to mind, but it only took me about 30 seconds to realize that was cray-cray. Frostbite would not look cute on me. No Everest summit attempts in my near future.
  • Will I run another marathon? I don’t know. So much time passed between when my first full and my second (almost a year and a half) that PRing was almost guaranteed. I don’t think going into a full knowing that the clock is ticking the whole time would be enjoyable. If I do run another, I’m going to have to do it with a buddy. Running 26.2 solo is no joke!

There you have it. Just about every single thought that I have had about my marathon experience! Any fellow black toenail peeps out there? Do y’all do weird stuff with numbers like that, or is it just me? Anything you’re dying to know about my marathon experience?*

Big D Texas Marathon Race Recap

When my alarm went off at 4:40 am on Sunday morning, my nerves and excitement immediately kicked in. I took my time eating my toast and getting dressed. I checked, double checked, triple checked that I had everything. I also went to the bathroom about twenty times, maybe more. At 5:45 I drove to my mom’s house. She was already ready to go, so I dumped my stuff in her car, and we were off to Fair Park.

The weather forecast had predicted severe and widespread storms. We experienced some rain (on and off) and overcast skies on the way to the race site but nothing major. As we sat in the care in the parking lot, we heard on the radio that the severe storms were going to be skipping us. (Yeay!) With about an hour until go time, we put on ponchos and got out of the car. I had plenty of time to stretch, go to the bathroom again, and hang out before walking over to the start.

My mom was walking the half, which started a half hour after the full, so she wished me luck, and then left me alone at the start. The race was relatively small (There were 700 full marathon finishers), so there were no corrals. I had planned to run with a pace group, but they didn’t have a pace group for the finish time I wanted. (The 4:20 group seemed too fast and 4:40 seemed – I hoped! – too slow.) I just planted myself toward the middle of the  crowd and took off running when it was time.

  • Mile one: 10:01
  • Mile two: 10:07 (<— I took off my poncho here and threw it away.)
  • Mile three: 9:41
  • Mile four: 9:32

Feeling good early on.

The first few miles were hot and humid. No poncho needed. I had hoped to hit a 10:00 pace for each mile. It’s faster than my long training runs had been but slower than I usually run a race. It ended up being hard mentally because I wanted to go faster! I saw person after person pass me in the early miles. I started to pick up the pace a little bit, even though I knew I shouldn’t. I also struggled when I came to hills. Normally I sprint down hills to use them to my advantage, but I wasn’t sure if I’d regret sprinting so early in the race. My indecision turned into inconsistency. Fast, slow, faster, slower. As a result, miles 3 and 4 were faster than they should have been.

  • Mile five: 9:52 (<— Gu)
  • Mile six: 9:59
  • Mile seven: 10:09
  • Mile eight: 10:06
  • Mile nine: 9:51

This stretch of miles ran along White Rock Lake. It was great to race there after logging so many training miles in the same place. So many spots that I passed held a memory: The street where all the DRC training runs started and ended, the stretch where we once joked about creating an experiment testing the hydrating properties of alcohol (I volunteered to be the control and drink water), Winfrey point where I ran the Texas Half. I tried not to think about how many miles I had left or how big the lake looked. I did a better job of pacing during this stretch. As we peeled off the lake, I could see the storm brewing in the distance. I heard another runner say that he saw lightning. I felt a big gust of cold wind and the rain started. Thankfully, it was just a light drizzle and the cold air that it brought with it felt good.

  • Mile eleven: 10:11 (<–Gu)
  • Mile twelve: 10:07
  • Mile thirteen:  9:40

We entered the neighborhoods, and I knew that I’d be seeing my big brother during this portion. The course map didn’t have mile markers (harumph!). I knew I’d see him (we ran right by his house), I just didn’t know when I’d see him. I spent three miles waiting to see him and getting all jazzed. I’ve had people cheer for me at the finish, but I’ve never had spectators on a course before. At one point, I texted him to say that I thought I was nearing his street. (His response: “If you can text, pick up the pace.” Ha! Thanks, Mike!) Sure enough, around 12.4, there he was. I started waving frantically. I could see my brother and his fiance on their porch. They ran out to the street and cheered and jumped up and down. It was just the boost that I needed! I decided that since I was about halfway through, I was going to give myself permission to pick up the pace. I took off!

  • Mile fourteen: 9:40
  • Mile fifteen: 10:00
  • Mile sixteen: 9:35 (<–Gu)
  • Mile seventeen: 10:04
  • Mile eighteen: 9:44
  • Mile nineteen: 9:43
  • Mile twenty: 10:17

One of my biggest fears pre-race was that during these miles I’d be all alone and hurting. That didn’t happen. Fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen I actually felt great. There were small pockets of crowds cheering, and even though there weren’t many of them, they were enthusiastic. I made an effort to thank every police officer and all the volunteers that I saw. I even got in a few high-fives (per my pre-race goals.) During Mile 17 I stopped at a water fountain to refill my handheld. I noticed that my feet felt heavy. It had rained on and off for more than hour, and my feet were soaked. I could feel some blisters forming, but they thankfully weren’t painful. By mile twenty, I’d already run back along the lake and found myself heading through Dallas toward Fair Park.

  • Mile twenty-one: 10:07 (<–Gu)
  • Mile twenty-two: 9:55
  • Mile twenty-three: 10:26
  • Mile twenty-four: 10:28

These were some of those hardest miles (mentally) that I have ever run in a race. Although I was tired, I never felt like I hit the wall physically; it was just a mental battle. I didn’t know if I could keep going, but I knew I couldn’t stop. There were very few spectators during most of these miles, and the nearest runners were often 100 yards ahead or behind me. I started to try to encourage myself by saying things out loud. “I can do this. I can. Keep going.” “Come on legs!” was another one. There were a few grunts and groans and a lot of “Ughs!” (At one point, I heard another runner say, “This was a stupid idea.” Ha! Tell it, sister!) I wanted so desperately to finish. I didn’t even care about my time. I just wanted to run the miles. I felt like I was moving in slow motion, so I’m surprised to see that my pace was pretty decent.

  • Mile twenty-five: 10:16
  • Mile twenty-six: 9:44
  • Final .60: 9:30

Around mile 25, I started to feel good mentally, but my body was tiring. (“Come on, legs!”) I was finally no longer in no man’s land and took comfort in the fact that there were other runners around. I was able to pass a few people. (Granted, they were people walking the half but still!) I also started to really push. I love finishing fast, so I went for it. Before the last .2 I saw Teal and Beth of Life is a Run. I heard one of them shout, “You’re Army Amy!” It made me feel like a rock star! As we took the final turn, there was a bit of a crowd. Their cheering seemed so loud compared to the non-existent cheering for the majority of the race. It felt great taking those final strides across the finish line.

My stats:

  • 26.60 mile finish time: 4:24:54 (officially)
  • Average pace: 9:57 per mile

My mom and I were able to link up right there at the finish line. (Ah, the beauty of a small race!) She had a great race, too. (A new PR! Way to go, Mom!) I found a banana and some water, and then we met her boyfriend and my brother for lunch at Chuy’s. (Can’t go wrong with Tex-Mex after a long run.)

I’m really proud of myself. I really honestly didn’t ever think I’d finish a full marathon in under 4:30. I respect the distance, so I went in with low expectations. I think the full impact of my accomplishment still hasn’t hit me. I spent the entire race trying not to think about how far it was, and now that it’s over, it doesn’t seem like I ran that far! Plus, training has been a distraction, a way to mark time while Stephen’s been deployed. Now it’s over, and he’s still not home. Instead of feeling a runner’s high, I feel a little bit of post-run blues. Womp womp.

Even so, it was an incredible experience. I’m so glad that I gave the marathon another attempt. I know I said it the other day, but I can’t say it enough: Thank you! 4:24:55 according to my Garmin! That’s a 9:57 average pace if you go by the distance it clocked me at. Couldn’t be happier! I’ve already eaten, and now it’s time for a much-needed shower. I want to let the experience crystallize a little first, so I’m not sure when I’ll have the race recap posted. (Probably tomorrow afternoon or Tuesday morning.) Big D Training: T-Minus 12 Hours

The anticipation for this race is starting to get to me. I feel like I’ve been saying, “It’s almost here!” for weeks now. (Hm, probably because I have.) Well, now it really is almost here.

My Stats:

  • Total miles for the week: 9.5
  • Total minutes on my feet: 98
  • Longest run: 4.2 miles on Wednesday
  • Shortest run: 2.5 miles on Tuesday
  • Fastest pace: 10:02 on Tuesday
  • Geronimo’s total miles: 2.5
  • Total miles since I started training for Big D in January: 366.06

The last time my totals were so low was back in January before I started training. It felt really weird to run so little. I kept telling Heather, my running buddy, “That was so easy!” at the end our runs this week. I have the feeling 3 miles won’t feel so easy when they come after 20-something other miles.

Prep Work:

My clothes are set out, my bags are packed (I have a pre-race bag and a post-race bag), the timer is on my shoe. I will be eating pasta very soon, and some bread is waiting to turn into toast for my breakfast in the morning. My Garmin is charging, and my iPod playlist is ready to go. All that’s left is to take it easy, stretch it out, and get a good night’s sleep. I’m not sure if I will actually get a good night’s sleep (I’m so nervous!), but I slept well last night, so I should be okay.

The weather forecast is calling for rain. (Weather.com says there’s a 50% chance of thunderstorms from 8am – 11am. Boo!) I’m trying not to worry about it. (Weather is a fickle thing, right?)

I did get a bit of a surprise to boost my confidence. Thursday evening I came home to find a package waiting for me. Inside was a gift from Stephen:


The little box had pearl earring and the big box had sunglasses, both from Tiffany’s! Don’t mind if I do! I really wish Stephen was here right now, and I’d much rather have him than gifts, but the it doesn’t hurt to know that he’s thinking of me. I plan to channel some of his “Army Strong” strength during the race tomorrow. Hooah!

Big D Training: T-Minus 1 Week

Good morning and happy Easter! I gotta tell ya, this weekend has been crazy for me. I only got 5 hours of sleep on Friday night and there are dirty dishes in the sink. Two things that are so not me! That’s jus thow busy I’ve been. Alas, I’m not too busy to talk about my weekly stats.

My Stats:

  • Total miles for the week: 18.67
  • Total minutes on my feet: 190
  • Longest run: 9.46 (A 15k race yesterday)
  • Shortest run: 4.21 miles  (monday)
  • Fastest pace: 9:37 (5 mile run on Wednesday)
  • Geronimo’s total miles: 4.5
  • Days until Big D Full marathon: 7

My mileage total looks low. I ran 10 miles on Sunday, but I counted those toward last week’s total. Technically I’ve run 28.67 miles in the 7 days (that makes me feel like I’m not slacking so much), but I can’t count the miles towards last week’s total and this week’s total; that’d be double dipping.

This week was characterized by big swirls of doubt about my running ability. It’s weird because if I was talking to someone else about running, I’d tell them, “Don’t worry! If you did your long runs, you’ll be fine. If you can run 20, you can run 26.2.” For some reason I cannot convince myself that the same is true for me.

This week all I’m going to do is take it easy. Every run should be short and slow. Gallons of water should be consumed. Stretching should happen in large quantities. The weather forecast for race day will be looked at a bajillion times. 7 days!*

Big D Training: T-Minus 6 Weeks

Last week I stated that I wanted to get in 3 weekday runs plus 1 weekend run. I’m happy to say, mission accomplished! I ran on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. It was a busy week, but I made running my priority. I’m pretty jazzed that I managed to do it without making myself crazy.

My Stats:

  • Total miles for the week: 24.62
  • Total minutes on my feet: 247
  • Longest run: 11 miles (after school on Friday. Boo-yah!)
  • Shortest run: 3 miles (Monday)
  • Fastest pace: 8:31 (At yesterday’s 10k)
  • Days until next race: 21 (Rock n’ Roll Dallas)
  • Days until Big D Full marathon: 42

Until now, the most I ever had run after work was 8 miles. (It was back when I was marathon training in 2010, and it was a horrible run. I tossed my cookies afterward.) I was kind of skeptical of running such a long distance after a full day of work, but some running coworkers were going for it. I decided to suck it up and tag along.

I’m so glad that I did. It ended up being a fantastic run! I felt strong almost the entire time, we had some great conversations, the weather could not have been better, and no cookies were tossed. Success!

I have been debating skipping Rock n’ Roll at the end of the month. My training plan has a 20 miler scheduled that same weekend. One option would be to run extra miles in addition to the race so that I get 20 total, but I know I probably won’t want to run extra that day. I also feel like I should run the 20 with my training group for solidarity and all. But on Friday, my running buddies and I talked about running Rock n’ Roll together. Plus, I keep thinking of how disappointed I was last year when I skipped Rock n’ Roll. Right now I’m planning to run it. We’ll see how many more times I waffle back and forth between now and then!

Overall, this was a great training week for me. Next week is going to even busier. (It’s the week before spring break and I have a gajillion meetings on top of my usual work load.) I’ll be happy to make it through the week with 3 total runs and a positive attitude.*
